WHO WORE IT BEST?

We all get that occasional urge to overhaul our appearance. For some, this desire can be placated by adding a few new items to the closet, or trying a new way of doing your makeup. For others, only a new piercing or tattoo will suffice. In Hollywood, ladies have historically taken a fittingly dramatic approach to this dilemma. By chopping their hair off, female celebrities make a drastic, but temporary alteration to their entire look, which is regarded as “bold.” This month, we take a look at Who Wore it Best: rebellious Hollywood hair cuts.

Miley Cyrus caused quite the stir on the internet when she posted photos of her new haircut. The bleach blonde pixie cut stunned ladies like myself who occasionally lose 45 minutes of life trolling through photos of her enviable long locks. Nonetheless, Miley was very excited about her new cut, telling her haters to shut-the-front-door, tweeting “[I] feel so happy, pretty, and free.”

Britney Spears. OOOOoooh Britney, you had a rough couple years there. When the going gets tough, what’s a girl to do besides panic? Allegedly stopping in at some random salon, as though it were an emergency, Brit took a shaver to her dome and went to work frantically buzzing off the sexpot locks she had become associated with. The message was clear: never underestimate me, cos I’m just crazy (and possibly high) enough to do it.

Emma Watson, best known for her role as Hermoine Granger, decided in 2010 to (as the ladies magazines love to say) “shed her good-girl image.” I imagine looking like a immensely famous character you spent nearly a decade of your life playing probably loses it’s appeal fast. After defiantly chopping her locks, Emma was quoted as saying “I’ve never felt so confident as I did with short hair — I felt really good in my own skin.”

Audrey Hepburn, in Roman Holiday, plays a princess exploring herself overseas. In one famous scene, Audrey’s character enters a barbershop and tells the man she wants it all chopped off. As he cuts it, the Italian barber dramatically announces “OFF!” while flinging large portions of her hair to the floor. The end result was a look that went on the inspire generations of females to shed their inhibitions, and their hair, in favor of a short, sassy, liberated look.
